In order to optimize the educational condition, prepare for the assessment, and provide better learning conditions for students, the college spent a lot of money in buying large quantities of new books. On April 18, two trucks carrying the large container arrived in front of the library under everyone’s expectations, and teachers and students of Dalian Art College have already gathered here after hearing the news. Sweat, dedication, happiness and gratitude were the key words at this moment. Teachers and students took the packets of books carrying chairman’s expectations for college development, carrying the hard work of related leaders and teachers, and carrying the students’ desire for seeking knowledge.
This batch of books mainly contains the professional books about apparel, design, performance, music and all kinds of books which are popular among the students, and covers the 22 major categories, with publication time of being more concentrated in nearly three years. This batch of new books enriches the library collection on the original basis and greatly improves the soft power of college education.
Books are the source of knowledge, and books under library collection represent the educational philosophy and strength of the college. For this batch of books, Chairman Wang Xianjun assigned related leaders to Beijing for purchase, made checks at all levels from selecting to purchasing books, and counted every detail. He also made a special visit to everyone, and would read it carefully when finding a good book. When standing at the area of children’s books, he remembered that children of many young teachers were still small, and the college would build the kindergarten this year, so he decided to buy another 20000 children’s books temporarily.
Books purchasing process took nine days, and relevant staff made the careful selection from 43 stacks. In the smallest stack of more than 1000 square meters and the largest one of more than 5000 square meters, and everyone had to walk back and forth every day. Climate in Beijing is dry, and stack is gloomy and cold inside. Sandpit and cement component plant are near the Fengtai Stack, the site of books purchasing is dusty, making people’s mouth parched and tongue scorched, and breathing is difficult without facemask. However, leading teachers in charge of purchasing still overcame difficulties and selected books with both quality and quantity guaranteed. Comrade He Jixiang, working in provincial office of the college, was more than 60 years old and suffered hypoglycemia. However, to ensure the efficient purchasing, he often personally carried new books and didn’t stop even with sweat dripping from his face. You Shengmei, the assistant to the president, suffering the back and leg disease, had to kneel on the seat because of back pain in the driving process from her place of residence to the stack, with round-trip driving distance of more than 130 km, and still insisted on selecting books. Library curator Du Chunmei, catching a cold and suffering the pharyngitis, still stuck to the post under the environment with air pollution. Yuan Baicheng, the assistant to the curator, had a nine-month-old baby, and often took the photo of the son for cheering himself up when feeling the most tired. Teacher Fan Mingming just learned that her son’s canthus was injured upon receiving notice of going to Beijing, but she made the proper arrangement, still put the work first and chose to go to Beijing. Teacher He Jinhua missed the last meeting with grandpa due to completing the books purchasing and selection.
The call of the college’s voluntary labor of carrying books received the positive response from more than 210 students from secondary schools such as School of Art and Design, School of Communication, School of Music and School of Clothing. Under the encouragement, students are not afraid of dirtiness and tiredness, helpful. Six girls from a same dormitory, No.6 class of 2004-grade costume designing, wearing white trousers, carried books together with boys, very “eyecatching” in the site. It was learned by the chairman that these six girls wearing white trousers originally planned to go to shopping center at the weekend, gave up their plan after seeing the busy scene without intention, and took part in voluntary labor. Their names are Li Qianqian, Zhang Ziyi, Xie Pinpin, Yang Ruiyao, Shi Xinping and Pan Qidan.
