Zhan Surong is a Professor and a member of the Academic Council of the School of Dance at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music, a postgraduate tutor, and a Visiting Professor in the Department of Chinese Folk Dance at the Beijing Dance Academy. She served as a director of the Educational Society of the Chinese Dancers Association, and Vice President of the Ethnic Minority Dance Institute of Liaoning Province. She has successively served as an actor at the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Northeast People’s Art Theater, and a teacher at the Liaoning Dance School and the Dance School of the Shenyang Conservatory of Music after graduating from the Northeast Luxun College of Literature and Art in 1951. She has trained dance artists during her over 40 years of secondary technical school, junior college and undergraduate teaching. She published several theses, including the monographs Ethnic Dance Training and Northeast Grand Yangko. The latter has been designated as a key textbook in the Chinese art education series taught in the secondary schools for art education in the “10th Five-Year Plan” of the Ministry of Education. She has often won the first prize for instruction in the dance “Peach and Plum Cup” contests for art colleges in Liaoning and nationwide, the “Liaoning Outstanding Art Performance” appellation, and excellent achievement prize certificates issued by the Liaoning Provincial Party committee and the Provincial government.
